Lower Academy Art
– Instructor: Cindy Birdsong. Art and its place in
history will be explored through art techniques and
experimentation with different art mediums such as painting,
printmaking, sculpture, drawing and 3D projects. Students
will learn how to view and critique, will understand how art
and history correspond to one another, and will experience
museum education and experimentation with various art
forms.
Lower Academy Advanced Art
– Instructor: Cindy Birdsong. Advanced Art will
combine art history and studio art skills and techniques.
Class content will cover the principles of art and elements
of design, drawing skills, painting (oil, acrylic,
watercolor) and printmaking as well as other methods and
mediums. Students interested in a particular medium in art
that have had the prerequisites listed above may pursue an
independent study in that area in this class with prior
permission of the teacher.
Art 1
– Instructor: Jim Chapman. Understanding the basic
elements of drawing--line, shape, color, value, form, and
space. Experimenting with various medium--painting,
printmaking, chalk, collage and more. Exploring the masters
in art history timelines. Journaling with art.
Art 2
– Instructor: Jim Chapman. Learning to articulate the
language of art--line, shape, color, value, texture, form,
and space. Experimenting with various medium--charcoal,
chalk, printmaking, painting. Understanding one point
perspective, composition, and more advanced drawing
techniques. Journaling with art. Exploring the masters in
art history timelines.
Sketch
- Instructor: Cindy Birdsong. Basic drawing skills
are the foundation for all art forms and techniques. This
class will cover life drawing, contour drawing and artworks
that exemplify use of line, form, shape and value. Materials
will include pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, colored pencil
and conte crayon.
Sculpture
– Instructor: Jim Chapman.
Art Enrichment
- Instructor: Cindy Birdsong. Art is everywhere in
the world we live in. This class will explore the history of
art and its place in our society through basic hands-on
projects and visual materials.
Art History
– Instructor: Cindy Birdsong. Art records and
commemorates historical events and gives tangible form to
feelings and emotions. This course will explore the history
of the art from prehistoric cave paintings to our current
postmodern visual culture. Hands-on activities will be
incorporated with art criticism, art history and artists
that influenced our society. Satisfies high school fine arts
requirement.
Lower Academy Drama
- Instructor: Sharon Wilharm. This course will
provide a general overview of stage drama. Students will
participate in a wide range of classroom drama activities.
The drama classes will collaborate with the art and chorus
classes to present a Christmas production and a spring
production. Drama students will also perform for chapel
services during the year.
Upper Academy Advanced Drama - Instructor: Sharon Wilharm.
This course will provide an in depth approach to drama as it
relates to the screen. Students will experience all aspects
of film production including screenwriting, directing,
acting for camera, filming, and editing. No prerequisite.
Upper Academy Drama Internship Program

Instructor: Sharon Wilharm.
Upper academy students may serve
as drama interns. They will receive individualized stage and
film drama instruction including playwriting, directing,
stage makeup, blocking, costuming, screenwriting, camera
techniques, and video editing. They will gain hands-on
experience as they apply these lessons as an intern for a
lower academy drama class. Drama interns will videotape
students throughout the year and at special events and edit
the footage together to create a video yearbook. Previous
drama experience required. Limit 2 students per class
period.
