Spanish 1Instructor: Debbie Nielsen. Offers students an introduction to a wide range of Spanish vocabulary and grammar.  Strong emphasis is placed upon acquiring vocabulary that will enable students to begin formulating basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish in the present tense. In addition, students will develop an awareness of the Hispanic world through the study of history, culture, and geography. Prerequisite: Academic standing of 8th grade or higher.

Spanish 2 - Instructor: Debbie Nielsen. Allows students the opportunity to continue building upon the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary acquired in Spanish I.  Students will move toward greater proficiency in written and spoken communication. Strong emphasis is also placed upon auditory and reading comprehension in the target language.  Students will increase their awareness of Hispanic culture and become more proficient in written and spoken communication skills in both the present and past tenses. Prerequisite: Successful completion of BCA Spanish 1 or a passing score on the BCA Spanish Placement Examination.

Spanish 3 - Instructor: Debbie Nielsen.  Students will develop proficiency in using all verb tenses in the Spanish language. Students will incorporate a broad base of vocabulary in order to progress toward greater fluency in speaking and writing.  Students will further develop reading comprehension through exposure to a variety of materials including excerpts of prose and poetry from the Hispanic world. Prerequisite: Successful completion of BCA Spanish 2 or passing score on the BCA Spanish Placement Examination.

Spanish 4 - Instructor: Debbie Nielsen. Offers an intensive study of Spanish language and literature.  The following components will comprise the course:  1) development of an extensive working vocabulary in Spanish, 2) reading and analysis of authentic literary selections in Spanish, 3) refinement of grammar skills, 4) planning, organizing, writing, and editing original expository essays in Spanish, 5) proficiency in speaking, and 6) listening comprehension. Prerequisite: Successful completion of BCA Spanish 3 or passing score on the BCA Spanish Placement Examination.

French 1Instructor: Anne Rogers.  Introduces students to the Francophone world. Plausible textbook scenarios with young French-speaking people engage students’ imagination and nurture critical thinking skills. Emphasis in the classroom is on the development of a working vocabulary, the structure of grammar, the written language, speaking and listening skills, and reading comprehension.  Class time is interspersed with discussion of the cultural, religious, and socio-political history of France.

French 2Instructor: Anne Rogers.  Builds upon the foundation of the basic grammar and vocabulary learned in French I.  Emphasis in the classroom is on speaking, listening, reading comprehension.  Students will sharpen their translation skills on selected readings from famous French authors, including Antoine de St. Exupery.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of BCA French 1 or a passing score on the BCA French Placement Examination.

FLEXInstructor: Various. Introduction to foreign languages for the younger student. This course will help broaden young students’ understanding of the world, language, and cultures. No texts are required; instead students will learn exciting and fun games, songs, and basic dialogues and vocabulary.

Introduction to Latin/Roman History and Geography Instructor: TBA. Introduces students to the foundations of the English language, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Undergirds the study of language for other languages, such as Spanish and French. Begins translation skills. Develops a base for the history of Rome and geography of the Mediterranean region. Prepares students for the National Latin Exam. Helps students to enjoy learning a language through hands-on activities.

Latin 1 8th EcceInstructor: Jean Quick. Builds upon skills learned in Intro to Latin. Study focuses on a thorough understanding of declensions, conjugations, and sentence syntax. Students may memorize well-known passages such as The Lord’s Prayer. Students begin to read and analyze more complex sentences and short paragraphs in Latin. English grammar is emphasized and taught to augment the student’s understanding of Latin. Hands-on activities are used to help students remember Roman history and vocabulary. Skills help students prepare for high school language requirements.  Prepares students for the National Latin Exam.

Latin 1 - Instructor: Jean Quick. Builds upon skills learned in Intro to Latin.  Develops further translation skills, language study, grammar base, and vocabulary  Emphasizes the influence of Rome on Christianity, and on American law, medicine, and other subjects.  Prepares students for the National Latin Exam. A traditional approach to the study using the text Latin for Americans.

Latin 2Instructor: Jean Quick. Builds upon skills learned in Latin 1 and augments learning skills in Latin; develops further translation skills, language study, grammar base, and vocabulary; emphasizes Rome’s influence; develops critical assessment of language. Prepares students for the National Latin Exam.

Latin 3 - Instructor: Jean Quick.   Builds upon skills learned in Latin I and Latin II.  ECCE ROMANI III is the culmination of ECCE I and II; it contains only original Latin readings.  Book III also continues the study of Roman history.  This book opens with selections from a short account of Roman history by the historian Eutropius, beginning with the year 64 B.C.  There follow selections from writings of Marcus Tullius Ciceero and Gaius Julius Caesar.  The book concludes with selections from Pliny and Petronius, two authors of the first century A.D.
